Begin with the fields
Title, date, material, dimensions, place, culture and accession history are separate claims. Read the wording closely: “probably,” “attributed to” and date ranges express different levels of certainty.
Then move to the curatorial note. It may explain how physical evidence supports an interpretation or identify competing theories.
Check what the image cannot show
A front photograph cannot establish weight, back construction, repairs, scale or wear. The Teotihuacan mask’s lack of eye openings and substantial stone material are crucial to the view that it was not worn.
Finally, follow the bibliography and return date. Our pages record when they were checked because collection scholarship changes.
